Defining Teflon coating:
Anti-rust coating also is known as Teflon coating which is
carefully done over the exterior surface of the car. This Teflon is synthesized
chemically from a fluoropolymer. Owned originally by Dupont, now this brand has
turned generic to the category of PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene) paint
sealants. This helps in protecting the painted surface of the car, offers
amazing shine and keeps away the issue of any sort of tear, wear and corrosion.
In gist, Teflon coating acts as a shield to the car and adds durability to
shine of car.
Its application is not
restricted to just the exterior body surface of a car but can be even applied under body parts. This under body Teflon coating prevails mostly in India and few
of companies like The Detailing Mafia, 3M car care and others have strong hands
over this car coating. It completely depends on your requirement, and most
people prefer thin coating for underbody prevention.
Teflon Coating Application Steps:
• Washing Process:
Coating process starts from the initial step of washing. Washing
is important to free the car from any type of dust, dirt and grimes. Painted
surface and plastic parts are properly washed off using a mild shampoo and
clean water. Then, the surface is properly wiped and dried. This method of washing is needed for freeing
up the painted surface of dust and dirt particles that can cause hindrance
while the application of Teflon coating. For drying up
the surface, soft cloth or microfibre towel are used to ensure that no unwanted
scratches are caused. This precaution helps you in maintaining maximum quality
while cleaning.
• Polishing Process:
This process involves the polish application over the car’s
painted surface. Basically, in this process car waxes are used and this step is
mandatory to maintain maximum possible shine and gloss before car body is
properly coated with Teflon. This measure can bring a dull paint look brighter
and significantly glossy.
• Teflon coating Application:
This is the final step in the coating process and it is the time
for looking up the bottle of liquid Teflon. It smells pungent when it is being
applied over the car paint. This smell disappears once the coating dries up.
This liquid coating is applied over the car parts using a soft sponge, pads or
cloth and then it is left for drying up for approx. 15 to 20 minutes.
When Teflon dries up, it chemically bonds up with the car body
surface and here starts the time of using the different piece of cloth for
massaging the surface. This second round of massaging helps in creating other
transparent layers of shiny coating. This is a bit effort taking the process
and is usually conducted using polishing equipment. Once the drop of the liquid
disappears, it is properly wiped off using a clean cloth for freeing it from
any sort of dust and residue.
Pros of Teflon Coating:
• Minor scratch protection:
The Teflon
coating is a clear thick coating which is slippery in nature. This protects the surface of the car from any
swirl marks and scratches which is caused by dust cleaning.
• Gloss Enhancement:
Application
of Teflon coating over car parts evens out the unevenness by filling up the
minor cracks and pits. So, in gist, it enhances the reflective potential of
paint and leaving high gloss finish over the car paint.
• Rust Protection:
In humid
weather, car and car parts are more prone to the process of rusting. This car
coating acts as an anti-rusting layer. Ideally, the underbody Teflon coating
must be applied when the car is new and clean.
• Sound Insulation:
The thicker
underbody Teflon coating applied over car even act as amazing and effective
sound dampeners. This will reduce the noise created by tires and car body. The
cabin seems comparative quieter because of the amazing feature of sound
absorption by the rubberized paints.
• Easy Maintenance:
The uniform
car underbody coating
gives the car a fresh look. It even brings ease in maintaining a car by simply
hosing the underside down.
Cons of the Teflon Coating:
• Non-lasting durability:
The coating done by Teflon doesn’t last
long enough. The effect can easily be washed off in just six months. After 6
months, you need to visit the detailers for redoing it. Even at times, you need
to switch to hard wax polish.
• High-cost Application:
The other downside of the Teflon coating is
its high-cost application.
